A New Fishery in the Making

Rocky Pen (now officially Lake Mooney) is located in Stafford County just north of the Rappahannock River. It will be the new water supply reservoir for Stafford County and, once full, it will be 520 acres and hold 5.5 billion gallons of water. Jason Hallacher, an Assistant Fisheries Biologist with VDGIF, said, “At this point, we have stocked red ear sunfish, bluegill, channel catfish, and largemouth bass (coming this spring). We will create other fisheries as well once the baseline species get established and we can take a look to see what is going on. I’m guessing we might be able to open it to fishing in Spring 2017.”
