Have You Heard? 2018 is the Year of the Bird!

One hundred years ago Congress passed the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect birds. DGIF encourages you to join in the centennial celebration of this important conservation treaty and our feathered friends.

Here’s a few ways you can kick-start your celebration of birds this year!

  • Visit the Year of the Bird website and make a new year’s resolution to help birds each month this year with simple, but meaningful actions.
  • Participate in Winter Wildlife Festival, January 26-28 in Virginia Beach. Sign up for guided excursions to view overwintering coastal birds, waterfowl, songbirds, and owls. Or take a workshop to learn the basics of birdwatching and bird photography or build your very own bluebird box. And don’t miss keynote speaker, Noah Stryker who will share his personal adventure “Birding without Borders: An Epic World Big Year.”
  • Continue to tune in to DGIF for more bird postings in recognition of the Year of the Bird. Throughout the year, we will be offering more ways that you can celebrate and help birds and we will also share how DGIF helps species in conservation need through our numerous bird conservation projects, ranging from eagles and falcons to shorebirds, water birds, marsh birds and resident and migrant songbirds.
