The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is pleased to announce the release of its newest Wildlife Conservationist License Plate. The plate depicts a Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber). In 2018, this colorful wildlife species was named Virginia’s official state salamander. Del. Eileen Filler-Corn, D-Fairfax, sponsored the bill at the urging of young conservationists affiliated with Salamander Savers, an ecological-minded 4-H group whose members ranged in age from 8 to 18. This special designation was also made possible through a collaborated effort between DWR, the Virginia Herpetological Society, and many naturalists and teachers, who worked hard to raise awareness about salamanders.

Runners, hikers, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts joined us on May 28, 29, 30, & 31, 2021 to help once again support our mission to keep Virginia’s wild places wild. Together, we helped raise $7,315 for our Restore the Wild initiative to benefit all of Virginia’s wildlife!

The July/August issue of Virginia Wildlife was the ever-popular Photography Showcase issue! More than 1,250 images were submitted from more than 275 photographers, and the Virginia Wildlife production team narrowed those entries down to the 136 images that we published. The Photography Showcase issue is a highlight each year, and this year’s edition has gotten lots of compliments! Single issues of the Photography Showcase are also for sale on GoOutdoorsVA.
Virginia Wildlife magazine also completed a successful transition from its former fulfillment house to a new company, a complicated process that involved the help of multiple DWR divisions. Outreach is very grateful for all the assistance they received! The company Publishers Services Associates now keeps track of all Virginia Wildlife subscribers, sends mailing lists to the printer, and coordinates invoicing and renewal efforts to subscribers. They also have created a new subscription platform that allows subscribers to subscribe, give a gift subscription, pay their bill, and change their address all online without customer service help.
The 2022 Virginia Wildlife calendar has been sent to the printer and will be available for purchase in early August!
