The first natural nesting cavity of a red-cockaded woodpecker is discovered on Big Woods WMA. Prescribed fire strategies are used on multiple areas of the Big Woods WMA, included the long leaf pine stands. More long leaf pines are planted on 68 acres of the Parkers Branch tract of Big Woods WMA, which was added to the WMA in 2016.
