Submergent

Coontail

A rootless free floating submergent plant that can grow up to 15 feet in length. Leaves are found in whorls of 5 or more around the stem, with individual leaves up to 3/4 inch in length. The plant is rough to the touch.

Elodea

A submergent plant with wide, oval leaves arranged around the stem generally in groups of 4. Elodea can be found rooted or free floating. Leaves are oblong (1 – 13/4 inches long) and narrow (1/10 – 1/5 inch wide).

Hydrilla

A submergent perennial plant which exhibits rapid growth. Leaves are sharply serrate, oblong, and whorled around the stem with a rough texture. Hydrilla is often confused with Elodea. Hydrilla can be distinguished from Elodea by texture and leaves are usually found in groups of 4 or more.

Najas

Najas has leaves that are opposite, but occasionally found in whorls of three. Leaves have small spines found along the edges. Najas grow in clumps on the bottom and may form dense mats.

Eurasian Water Milfoil

This introduced species with long flexible stems that has leaves concentrated towards the upper ends. Actively growing portions are red in coloration. Leaves are in whorls of 4, about 1 inch long.

Fanwort

Fanwort has leaves that are opposite and dissected into linear divisions that result in a fan-like shape. Leaves typically are 1/2 – 3/4 inch in length.

Parrotfeather

This exotic plant is from South America. The stems are red or orange. Leaves are in whorls of 3-6, 1/2 to 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. The leaves appear feathery and are divided into narrow segments.

Pondweeds (Potamogeton)

Pondweeds generally have leaves that are submergent and/or floating. Leaves are alternate and vary in dimensions from slender to wide depending on the species.
