Description

This loop takes you over the rivers and ridges of Rockbridge County. The Maury River, the main river in the area, was once an important shipping artery connecting Lexington and the surrounding mountains with Richmond and the coast. While the Maury no longer carries goods in trade to Richmond, the cool clear waters still run into the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Exploring the banks of the Maury River leads the visitor from the deep woods of Goshen Wildlife Management Area into the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista. Both cities host parks flanking the river with bountiful wildlife watching opportunities. The communities along the Maury River in Rockbridge County recognize the importance of the river and its vital role in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The eclectic Boxerwood Garden serves as a unique centerpiece to this loop, combining nature, art and education as a reminder of the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
