Description

The Roanoke-Meherrin Summit Loop revolves around the quiet community of Keysville and the headwaters of three State Scenic Rivers, the Roanoke (Staunton), Meherrin, and Appomattox. The sites along this loop offer access to a number of private properties with a profusion of wildlife rich habitats to explore. The second stop at Briery Church offers the opportunity to see the beginnings of the Appomattox watershed which eventually travels to the James River and onto the Chesapeake Bay. Habitats at the other sites range from open fields which hold eastern bluebirds and eastern kingbirds, to towering forests and wetlands with their associated pileated and red-headed woodpeckers, to regenerating forests with their numerous eastern towhees. You may even see green herons stalking a beaver pond. With so many habitats to explore, there is always something to be found along this exciting loop.
