Mid-Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog

Fact File

Scientific Name: Lithobates kauffeldi

Classification: Amphibian

Size: Up to 3.5 inches

Distribution: Found throughout much of southeastern Virginia westward towards the I-95 corridor with only one record on the Eastern Shore. More of a habitat specialist than the Coastal Plains Leopard Frog as it appears to favor riparian habitats, particularly cypress-gum swamps.

Identifying Characteristics

Similar in appearance to the Coastal Plains Leopard Frog, but with a more muted pattern. The white spot on the tympanum is often absent or barely noticeable. Dorsolateral folds are not as visually prominent and the snout is more rounded than in the Coastal Plains Leopard Frog. Although not always a diagnosable characteristic, the pattern on the inner thigh is usually mottled white or yellowish-green on a black background.
