DWR Fish Hatcheries to Reopen May 27
Richmond, VA — The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is thrilled to announce that all of their fish hatcheries will reopen to the public on Friday, May 27!
The hatcheries have been closed to the public since early 2021 in order to insure the continuation of operations during the COVID pandemic. Hatcheries remained operational during the public closure and were able to meet their fish production and stocking goals.
DWR operates nine fish hatcheries whose actions help to support a wide range of fishing opportunities for anglers throughout the Commonwealth. Nearly one million catchable trout and several million warm water species such as striped bass, walleye, crappie, and sunfish are released into several hundred waters on an annual basis.
Additional information on DWR’s State Fish Hatcheries and stocking program can be found here: dwr.virginia.gov/fishing/fish-stocking/state-hatcheries/
If you’re interested in visiting a hatchery, they would be glad to show you around. Please contact the person above to coordinate.
