DWR Recognizes Fisheries and Wildlife Staff

Richmond, VA — On Thursday, December 20, the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), along with the Board of the Department of Wildlife Resources, recognized staff for their outstanding efforts over the past year. Scott Hermann was presented with the Fisheries Biologist of the Year award and Scott Riley was presented with the Lands and Access Employee of the Year. These annual awards are given to employees who have shown exemplary work efforts to their colleagues and the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Fisheries Biologist of the Year: Scott Hermann

Scott has been with DWR since 1998; has worked as a Fisheries Technician and as a District Biologist.  He currently manages four high profile large impoundments, including Lake Chesdin, twenty small impoundments, and two large rivers across 19 counties.

Scott exemplifies service to the general public and is one of the most visible biologists that DWR has. He regularly leads fishing events, is present on every Free Fishing Day, and has served as a major driving force in FishLocalVA. Scott is ever present in DWRs Fishing Reports, providing tips on catching catfish, trout, bass, or panfish. He has really demonstrated how a biologist can not only provide fisheries management expertise, but also tailor specific messaging to their constituents. DWR congratulates Scott on his honorable award!

Lands and Access Employee of the Year: Scott Riley

Scott Riley is the Boat Access/Facilities Maintenance Technician in charge of boat access maintenance and inspections.  Scott coordinated all the boat access functions and related work, providing expertise and assistance on major projects.  He oversaw boat access related vendor contracts for mowing, trash removal, and sanitation. He worked closely with two other Lands & Access staff and divided routine maintenance of the boat access facilities between those two positions and his own. Due to the shared routine maintenance responsibilities, he has been able to do more work assisting the Wildlife Management Areas and other divisions with various projects.  This was in addition to his normal duties and responsibilities of maintaining the boat access ramps, roads, parking areas, and signage.

Scott is retiring from DWR on February 1, 2022.  His technical expertise, skills and abilities, years of experience, versatility, and willingness and ability to work so well with others is exemplary.  The Department wishes him well as he moves into his well-deserved retirement and future endeavors! Congratulations, Scott!

Please join the Department in congratulating their amazing staff on these prestigious awards!
