CWD is a is a fatal neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose caused by abnormal infectious protein called a prion. CWD can spread from deer to deer directly through saliva, feces, and urine and indirectly due to soil contaminated with prions. CWD infected deer have been found in 15 Virginia counties. In an attempt to slow the spread of CWD, DWR has established four disease management areas (DMA) encompassing a total of 25 counties. To learn more about the newly established DMA 4 or the expansion of DMA 3 and the associated regulations, attend one of the meetings mentioned above or visit the CWD webpage.
