The 2022 Old Dominion One Shot Turkey Hunt and Youth Essay Contest
Richmond, VA — On Saturday, April 23, citizens of the Commonwealth participated in the 6th Annual One Shot Turkey Hunt; a one-of-a-kind outdoors experience. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia (WFV) coordinated this annual event, which provided the opportunity to hunt some of the most exclusive properties with experienced guides. It also focuses on providing opportunities to 1st responders, veterans and youth.
The One Shot Turkey Hunt brings together people to celebrate Virginia hunting heritage. This year, 34 hunters went afield guided by some of the best turkey hunters in Virginia, on some of the most turkey rich properties.
This event also raises money to promote hunting and outdoor wildlife opportunities across the state and support the DWR/WFV Virginia Wildlife Grant Program. The Grant Program provides a funding source to non-profits, schools and government agencies with a focus to connect youth to the outdoors. In 2021–2022, the Virginia Wildlife Grant Program awarded almost $185,000 to support 23 projects impacting thousands of kids with a focus on underserved communities.

- Heaviest Bird – Shelby Haynie, Youth Essay Winner
- Longest Beard – Austin LaFollette, 1st Responder
- Longest Spur – Kimberly James – first time turkey hunter and DWR employee
