The Forestry Quail Program is a partnership program between the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries that provides funding assistance to landowners interested in quail-friendly forestry practices. Funding is only available in Virginia’s fifteen Quail Priority Area Counties (PDF).
Currently, five practices are available:
- Managing understory woody vegetation in thinned forestland with legume-friendly herbicides,
- Commercial thinning of small acreage stands,
- Establishment of native, diminished pine species such as longleaf and shortleaf pine,
- Pre-commercial thinning,
- Prescribed burning.
For more information, see the program brochure and please contact your local Department of Forestry staff and Private Lands Biologist to get started.
