This skillet macaroni and cheese with thinly sliced wood duck breasts completed the whole experience of my first duck hunt. This is definitely a comfort food dish that’s perfect for any occasion. It’s simple, quick, and a one-skillet meal is always delightful. Macaroni & Cheese is a certain crowd-pleaser, but the added tender duck breasts give it a tasteful and hearty component. I recommend adding a decent amount of peppery spices and garlic to give it a slight kick, but that depends on personal preference.
Perhaps the dearest part of it all is preparing the wild game as the unique meal that it can be. It’s a challenge to obtain wild game, especially when it’s flying nearly 60 mph, 30-yards away
|wood duck breasts
|box of penne pasta – cooked
|shredded Cheddar cheese (or slightly more)
|~ 2 TBSP flour
|~ ½ Cup milk (add more if mix begins to thicken too much)
|fresh Garlic cloves chopped (or minced garlic)
|Cheyanne pepper (ground)
|Red pepper flakes
|Honey Dijon mustard
|Salt & pepper
How to Prepare
- Cook pasta according to directions
- Cook breasts in skillet on medium-low heat and shred the breasts as they cook. Season with salt and pepper and garlic powder
- Remove breasts from skillet and melt 3 TBSP of butter in the skillet. Add the flour and milk. Stir until it begins to thicken. Add the garlic cloves, salt and pepper and Cheyanne pepper.
- Add the shredded breasts and stir.
- Add the pasta and stir until everything is coated in the flour mixture. Let cook for about 2 minutes on Med-Low heat.
- Add the cheese slowly until it melts and covers everything in the pan. Add cheese to your tasting.
- Let simmer for about 5 minutes in low, or until cheese is completely melted.
- Add red pepper flakes, mustard and other spices to your tasting. Stir everything together.
- Top mac n cheese with bread crumbs (but don’t completely cover with the crumbs) and put in oven for 20 minutes on 350 degrees. Mix-up/push down the crumbs a bit to coat with cheese and make crispy.
