2019–2020 Fishing and Boating Regulatory Cycle Timeline for 2021 Implementation

(*Revised April 2020 due to COVID-19 impacts to Board Meetings)

  • December 30, 2019 – February 28, 2020: 60-day public comment scoping period. Public can submit regulatory ideas regarding fishing and boating in the Commonwealth.
  • February – March, 2020: Staff committees to meet at various meetings to review, discuss, and consider public comments. Comments are grouped by subject, ideas and needs start to take shape.
  • *March 18, 2020: Wildlife and Boating Committee (WBC) of the Board presented scoping ideas. (No Board meetings due to COVID-19 impacts)
  • *March 19, 2020: Full Board meets and hears summary of public scoping comments, discussion on ideas, needs, and concerns will take place. (Meeting did not occur, no action was taken on regulatory scoping ideas)
  • *April – July, 2020: Aquatic staff core group meets to finalize staff recommendations, finalize staff recommendations with Office of Attorney General (This is a change in schedule to accommodate for COVID-19 impacts)
  • August 19, 2020: Wildlife and Boat committee meeting – Staff recommendations presented (If COVID-19 impacts over and Board meetings occur, Public welcome to attend)
  • August 20, 2020: Full Board meeting – staff recommendations presented, Board proposals created to go out for public comment (If COVID-19 impacts over and Board meetings occur, Public welcome to attend)
  • August 27, 2020: 45-day public comment period will open following August 20 Board meeting
  • October 2020: Wildlife, Boat and Law committee – staff presents final recommendations on proposals (date TBD)
  • October 2020: Full Board meeting – staff presents final recommendations for final Board approval (date TBD)
  • Most of these regulations will typically become law effective January 1, 2021 (subject to Board decision).
