Clearbrook Lake Biologist Report 2022

  • May 17, 2022

On May 16th, 2022 department biologists and technicians conducted spring sampling using raft electrofishing gear. Our staff made two 15 minute runs covering a majority of the shoreline habitat circumnavigating the lake. In total, 92 fish were collected during the sample, representing 4 gamefish species (Largemouth Bass, Bluegill Sunfish, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, and Channel Catfish).

Largemouth Bass

A total of 51 bass were netted at a catch rate of 118 fish per hour. Sizes ranged from 5-19 inches in length, and there are quite a few quality sized bass patrolling the shallows. 90.1% of the bass captured are considered adults or stock sized fish (>8”), within that group 67.4% are considered quality sized largemouth (>12”) and 34.8% were >15″. We were impressed with the number of heavy bass this small reservoir is currently producing, and judging by the pictures below, its easy to see where they are finding an abundant food source. The catch rates of quality sized fish for this small pond are extremely high compared to other impoundments in our district. With fantastic bank access available, it is great place to try your luck fishing for a trophy bass or to introduce a novice angler to fishing. Try targeting the dock with a trout flavored crankbait.

Sunfish

Unlike the bass population, the sunfish fishery is pretty poor. The bream are comprised of small Bluegill and Pumpkinseed sunfish. Anglers can expect to catch sunfish <5”.

Channel Catfish

Catfish are present, but low in numbers. Natural reproduction is extremely limited, so DWR stocks advanced fingerlings each fall to enhance the fishery.

Trout

Clearbrook lake is part of DWR’s stocked trout program. It is listed as an “A” water, so it is stocked eight times between October 1st and May 31st usually with Rainbow Trout or Brown Trout.
