Description
From its scenic seashores to its cypress swamps, the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area offers a multitude of year-round birding and wildlife viewing adventures. The unique shape of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, just north of Virginia Beach, funnels migratory songbirds, raptors, and monarch butterflies down through the area each fall as they journey south down the Atlantic Flyway. Winter wetlands fill with a wide diversity of waterfowl that overwinter in the area’s mild climate, while whales, seals, and arctic-breeding seabirds can be spotted offshore. In spring, neo-tropical songbirds and flocks of shorebirds stop over in the area’s rich habitats as they migrate back north along the Atlantic Flyway. During summer, the outdoors abound with northeastern and southeastern breeding birds, bald eagles and osprey, swarms of butterflies and dragonflies, frogs and turtles, and dolphins swimming along the coastal waters. Several companies in the area cater to wildlife lovers by offering whale watching excursions, pelagic birding trips, and other nature adventures. The Virginia Beach Department of Convention and Visitor Development will be happy to assist interested visitors in contacting these businesses. The area also has accommodations to fit every budget, cuisines that run the gamut, and all of the amenities a visitor could want, making the area a year-round destination.
