Description
The Prince William Loop begins at the historic Town of Occoquan and ends at the Chopawamsic Creek Wildlife Area—a viewing platform and nature trail along the Chopawamsic Creek on the Quantico Marine Base. In between, it meanders through a national wildlife refuge, a conserved wetlands site, and a state park. All of the sites are bordered by the Potomac River to the east and offer a variety of habitats including freshwater tidal wetlands, brackish marshes, tidal creeks, and deciduous forests. The largest site on this loop is Prince William Forest Park. This woodland watershed lies in the transition from the rolling hills of the Piedmont Plateau to the lowlands of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Wildlife abound at all the sites along this loop, and the observant visitor may witness dragonflies and damselflies, reptiles and amphibians, waterfowl and shorebirds, and migratory and nesting songbirds. Other water-loving wildlife, such as muskrats and beavers, are also common.
