Description
Appomattox Community Park lies on the southern edge of the Town of Appomattox. In addition to a traditional playground, the park holds a walking trail and numerous wildlife watching opportunities. It is surrounded on three sides by undeveloped open brushy fields making it attractive to a variety of open country and woodland species. Walk along the creek and search for flocks of tufted titmice and Carolina chickadees, which can often be joined by numerous red-eyed vireos, downy woodpeckers and occasionally, white-breasted nuthatches. The sounds of raucous blue jays and American crows could lead to a raptor or even an owl being chased from its hiding place deep in one of the tree lines.
Check the beds of flowering plants for a variety of butterflies, including red-spotted purple, eastern tiger swallowtail and the occasional viceroy or monarch. Out in the open fields, scan for cruising common green darners and search the stream for powdered dancers along its more open stretches.
