Description

The nature trail at Baylor Park is an approximately one half mile long foot trail along the banks of Norris Pond on the north side of the town of Kilmarnock. The trail begins at a parking lot on VA Route 3 just north of (and down the hill from) the traffic light at Old Fairground way. A map of the trail can be found on the park’s webpage.

Most of the trail follows an old logging road along the side of a steep bank that is heavily wooded with large oaks, beech, sweet gum, black gum and both Virginia and loblolly pine. Norris Pond has little open water but several streams flow through the extensive open wetlands that hold waterfowl in the winter and wading birds in the summer. Warblers, thrushes, woodpeckers and other forest birds are possible in season. The trail has several small footbridges that cross streams and wet areas and there are some short steep sections.
