Collinsville Jaycee Park

Elevation: 1039 ft.

This 27-acre park is primarily composed of deciduous woodland surrounded by residential development. The park has a perennial stream that provides a water source for animals and is an excellent focal point for any visit. From the central picnic area there is a 1.25 mile hiking trail that meanders through the woods and provides several opportunities to look into the treetops along the stream course for hidden wildlife. The site is reportedly at its best in the fall and spring when numerous migrant songbirds drop in for a snack or a bath in the creek. Throughout the year, the park hosts many of Virginia’s typical woodland bird species. The ubiquitous Carolina chickadee and tufted titmouse are joined by white-breasted nuthatch and eastern wood-pewee, while the numerous large trees attract hairy, downy, red-bellied, and pileated woodpeckers. The wildflowers along the wood’s edge attract butterflies such as the prolific spicebush swallowtail. Look along the creek for common whitetail. Although the park is surrounded by housing, white-tailed deer are numerous in the park and readily seen.
