Glen Maury Park

Description

Elevation: 793 ft.

Glen Maury Park sits on the Maury River in downtown Buena Vista. The park grants visitors access to the river as well as provides a large tract of pine and hardwood forest on a hillside overlooking the town and surrounding countryside. The river supports a variety of water-associated birds including green and great blue herons, wood duck, Canada geese, and belted kingfisher. The water is also an excellent place to search for dragonflies such as widow skimmer, black-shouldered spinylegs, eastern pondhawk, common whitetail and prince baskettail. Creeping up the hill away from the river, the road soon enters the shade of towering white pines which host woodland birds such as eastern wood-pewee and the magnificent pileated woodpecker. Butterflies patrol the edges of these impressive wooded groves with spicebush swallowtails singling out the last flowering plants of summer.
