Description
This large urban park is centered on three lakes. An extensive trail system originates near the nature center and aquarium, where visitors encounter an underwater viewing window and interpretive exhibits of the local flora and fauna. From the center, the trails meander through a variety of habitats including swamps, upland forests, open fields, meadows, and riparian woodlands. In wooded areas, look for woodpeckers, vireos, and other woodland passerines. Darting flecks of vibrant gold amid swamp forests can be attributed to the Center’s successful prothonotary warbler nest box program. From the observation platform on the lake edge, herons and other waders can be seen hunting the shallows for small fish and amphibians. This is also an excellent venue to study dragonflies and damselflies.
