Description
Wilck’s Lake is a 150-acre natural area, including a 55-acre lake, managed and owned by the Town of Farmville. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the two-mile hiking/walking trail that circumnavigates the lake and provides abundant opportunities for birding and wildlife watching. Over half of the trail is under a canopy of trees and passes through various marsh, swamp and river habitats with a observation platform overlooking the marsh. Species of birds that one might expect to see include: geese, wood ducks, mallards, black ducks, teal, coots, great blue heron, green heron, kingfisher, osprey, hooded mergansers, wild turkey, vultures, barred owl, red-winged blackbirds, cardinals, prothonotary warbler, and various other songbirds. Other wildlife includes: muskrat, beaver, otter, mink, raccoon, white-tail deer, red and gray fox, rabbit, gray squirrel, bobcat, black rat snake, northern water snake and garter snake.
The lake is stocked and managed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Fish species include: large mouth bass, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, carp, and gizzard shad. Wilck’s Lake is family-friendly. Facilities available to the public include a playground for children, picnic shelters and restroom facilities.

From Cumberland State Forest, return to Rt. 629 South and follow it to US 60. Turn left onto US 60 East and follow it a short distance to SR 45 South. Turn right onto SR 45 and follow it for approximately 15 miles to the Town of Farmville. At the intersection of SR 45 and US 460 BUSINESS in Farmville turn right and continue for almost a mile to parking on the left.
